PrEP

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a pill that can be taken by HIV negative people before and after sex to protect them from contracting HIV. Taking PrEP before being exposed to HIV (Pre-Exposure) means that there is enough drugs in a person’s blood stream to block HIV if it enters their body.

NHS England now provides PrEP from sexual health clinics find out more from Prepster.

More information about PrEP is also on the AIDS Map website.

PEP

PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) is a 28 day course of medication that can stop HIV infection after it has entered the body, it must be taken within 72 hours of potential exposure to the virus, but ideally within 24 hours. For more information visit the NHS website.

PEP should be used as a last resort, for example if a condom has failed, and should not be used as a morning-after pill for HIV. It is also not guaranteed to work.

PEP is available from sexual health clinics in the UK, if you require it when clinics are closed it is best to go to A&E, it is not readily available at GP practices. It is important that PEP is taken exactly as prescribed as missing doses makes it less effective.
